Mene Mene Tekel Upharsin is the first solo exhibition by poet, DJ, and artist James Massiah. Presenting a series of text based works extracted from a single poem, the show is inspired by a scene from Hanna-Barbera’s religious animation “The Greatest Adventure; Daniel and the Lion’s Den”.
The words Mene Mene Tekel Upharsin appear during the great feast of Babylon, whereupon God, angered by the depraved and unruly festivities, summons an Angel to inscribe these words on the walls of King Belshazzar’s palace for all to see. The words are a warning, a call for self-reflection and religious condoning of amoral affairs. This poster has been created by James in conjunction with the exhibition. To echo the large scale works of the show, each poster is screen-printed on silver galvanized paper.
