Read the Q&A
In a world moving faster than ever, Sophie Lou Jacobsen is asking a quieter question: what if the objects around us could actually make us happy? Since founding her New York studio in 2019, the Franco-American designer has built a body of work rooted in that conviction that everyday objects, when designed with genuine intention, hold an intrinsic power to shift our mood, elevate our rituals, and bring lasting joy to daily life. Working predominantly in glass, Sophie explores the relationship between object and user with a poet's eye and a designer's precision. Her work transforms the simple and the familiar into something surprising, pleasing, and deeply considered. Not decoration for its own sake, but objects imbued with meaning designed to be lived with, respected, and returned to. More recently, her scope has expanded into lighting and larger limited edition pieces. But the investigation remains the same: how do you design for happiness? And how do you make it last?

Semaine What’s important to you right now?
S.L.J Making work and objects that feel genuine and long lasting in this increasingly volatile world. I am always wondering about the meaning of this work that I do, and what makes it important (and if it is important!). At the core, my work aims to make people feel happy, and while it's not saving lives, if I can help bring any kind of joy to the world at this moment I think that's quite a feat. So my investigation always remains – how to keep up with this joy? How can I help make people happy? Is the happiness I am bringing thoughtful, necessary, needed? What will continue to make people come back, and engage with the objects I am designing? To summarize, I suppose what is important to me right now is (striving for) happiness!

Semaine If you were an object what would you be?
S.L.J A spinning top.

Semaine Describe your taste in one word?
S.L.J Layered.

Semaine Where would you like to be right now?
S.L.J On an island in Greece.
